Donald Harmon Obituary

Donald B. Harmon, 87 of Woodsfield, Ohio passed away Tuesday December 11, 2018 at his home.  He was born in Tellico Plains, Tennessee July 22, 1931 a son of the late Campbell & Bernice Irene Stephens Harmon.

Don was a member of the First Baptist Church of Woodsfield.  He retired from Ormet Aluminum Hannibal, Ohio and was a US Airforce Veteran having served during the Korean War.

From the Monroe County Beacon Published May of 2010 and written by Staff Writer Taylor Abbott:
Woodsfield Village Council recently honored lifelong Woodsfield resident Don Harmon during their May 3 meeting. Mayor Bill Bolon reconvened the meeting at 7:30 p.m.  by reading the resolution honoring Harmon.

Bolon read the resolution aloud saying, “Don Harmon has dedicated decades of such selfless service to the citizens of our village of Woodsfield, in his tireless and devoted acts which have developed, maintained, and enhanced the aesthetic appearance and recreational opportunities offered by the village of Woodsfield.”
He went on to say that Harmon’s service and contributions to the Woodsfield Park Board, Woodsfield Youth Center, and the Woodsfield municipal swimming pool have been essential to the benefits those programs and facilities offer the citizens of Woodsfield.
It was then resolved by council after the resolution’s reading that Don Harmon be honored by proclaiming the tennis courts at Memorial Park be called, now and perpetually, “Don Harmon Tennis Courts.”
A roar of applause and standing ovation for the community leader was given. Harmon thanked those in attendance and said, “I don’t know what to say. You all have me so shook up, I’m speechless.”

He is survived by his wife JoAnn Hunt Harmon of Woodsfield, son Gus (Denise) Harmon of Tyler, Texas, daughters Ann (Buck) Chewning of Woodsfield, and Vicki Harmon of Louisville, Kentucky, brother Tom Harmon of Knoxville, Tennessee, sister Patricia Ann Smith of Maryville, Tennessee, grandchildren Leslie Chewning, Tyler (Brittany) Harmon, and Sarah (Scott Birch) Harmon.

Friends received from 11a.m until time of funeral service at 1:30 p.m. Saturday December 15, 2018 at the First Baptist Church of Woodsfield, 114 North Paul St. Woodsfield, Ohio with Pastor T.J. Milam officiating.  Burial will follow in Oaklawn Cemetery Woodsfield, Ohio.
