Walter Starr

The Honorable Judge Walter R. Starr, 64 of Lewisville, Ohio passed away Monday, November 19, 2018, at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, West Virginia. He was born in Akron, Ohio, July 4, 1954, son of the late Leo Starr and Violet Scarpellini Starr.

As a young child, Walter and his family spent summers working many hard, yet enjoyable hours in the oil fields of Monroe County. Later he graduated from Akron University and then Ohio Northern University Pettit College of Law. In 1979, he returned to Monroe County as a partner in the law firm of Yoss & Starr and served as an active member in UNOGAS supporting the local oil and gas industry. Appointed Monroe County Common Pleas Judge of the Probate Juvenile Division in 1991, Walter dedicated his life to helping the families of Monroe County.

His passion for helping young people continued until his retirement in 2012, due to muscular dystrophy, and then carried over to teaching his grandchildren. In them, he strived to instill the strong work ethic by which he lived. From his many years in the oil fields to his strong devotion serving his church, the First United Methodist Church of Woodsfield, and community, Judge Starr had a positive, powerful influence on many lives.

Walter is survived by his wife Lois Williamson Starr of Lewisville, step daughters Amy Ludwig Figel and Beth Ludwig (Jay) Rohal both of Caldwell, Ohio, brothers Leo David Starr of Tallmadge, Ohio, and Chris (Christine) Starr of Selineville, Ohio, and sister Rita (Richard) Young of Diamond, Ohio. He was “Grandpa Walter” to Justin, Cody, Laken, Jordan, Luke, Joseph, and Grady.

Friends will be received from 11 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 24, 2018, at the First United Methodist Church of Woodsfield, 136 N. Main Street, Woodsfield, Ohio with Rev. David Cottrell officiating. Burial will follow at Oaklawn Cemetery, Woodsfield, Ohio.
