Alvin Thompson Obituary

Alvin O’Neil Thompson, 84, of Woodsfield, Ohio, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2026, at Arbors at Woodsfield.

He leaves an enduring legacy as a husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, Christian and as a steadfast friend to many, but especially as an educator, as evidenced by the countless Switzerland of Ohio Local School District alumni who still think of him as "Mr. Thompson."

A son of the late Wayne & Midred Lallathin Thompson, he was born on Sept. 26, 1941, at home near Laings, Ohio, in the same house on the family homestead in which he went on to raise his six children and spend most of his life.

A1959 graduate of River High School, Alvin went on to become a math and science teacher and then a principal. He worked in various local schools, including Sardis, Midway, Woodsfield and Skyvue elementaries, for more than three decades.

Alvin was known for his faithful service at the Laings Church of Christ, where he frequently taught Bible class, led songs and served as treasurer for many years.

Through it all, he remained a farm boy at heart, and few things brought him as much joy as being behind the wheel of his John Deere 730 tractor -- perhaps with a grandchild perched on his knee.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter Christina Thompson, son-in-law Andrew Copley, sister and brother-in-law Rosalee and Dr. Ronald Janes, and father and mother-in-law Junior and Doris Miller.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years Connie Miller Thompson of Woodsfield, sons Neil (Melissa) Thompson of Plain City, and Jared Thompson of Wheeling, West Virginia, daughters Marsha Keevert of Woodsfield, Deanna Wilhelm of Woodsfield, Rebecca Copley of Woodsfield, brothers, Donald (Jeannette) Thompson of Woodsfield, and Eugene Thompson of Rittman, Ohio, grandchildren Josh, Caitlin, Deidre, Joel, Logan, Grant, Justin, Emma and Leah and several great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received from 2 – 4 & 5 – 7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 8, and from 10 a.m. until time of funeral service at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 9, 2026, at the Bauer-Turner Funeral Home Woodsfield, Ohio, with Sam Bartrug officiating. Burial will follow in the West Union Cemetery near Sardis, Ohio.
