Phyllis Rae Demchak, 87, of Woodsfield, Ohio passed away on February 5, 2026 at her home. She was born on February 2, 1939 in Glouster, Ohio, a daughter of Elijah E and Rose Shaner Smith.
Phyllis was a housewife, mother and business woman. She moved with her husband George to Woodsfield in 1958. She was a certified Red Cross Water Safety Instructor and provided free swimming lessons at the Monroe Memorial Pool spending countless hours teaching children and adults to swim. She worked at the LGAM shirt factory and IGA in Woodsfield. She also served on the Woodsfield Village Council. Her business ventures included Chak’s and George’s Pizza in Woodsfield. She was a member of St. Sylvester Church, a president of Catholic Woman’s Club for several years and a supporter of catholic education at St. Sylvester Central School. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, George, an infant son Michael and a brother Robert Smith.
Surviving are her three children, Denise (Joel) Kachel, Steven (Dixie) Demchak and Anne (Loren) Hartshorn, all of Woodsfield; grandchildren, Dugan (Cassie) Demchak, Tiffany (Justin) Hogue, Nicole (Jonathan) Wilson, Joshua (Maggie) Hartshorn, Andrew Hartshorn (companion Kelly Thoman), Jennifer Kachel, Katherine Kachel; great grandchildren, Ava and Alexa Wilson, Taylen, Hoyt, Bradleigh and Case Hartshorn, Holden Zeakes, Hank, Everly and Fenley Hogue, Kade, Lane, Max, Miles and Evie Demchak, Coen and Sawyer Hartshorn, Aubrey and Teagan Thoman.
According to Phyllis’s wishes, cremation elected with no visitation or services planned. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Sylvester Central School, 119 Wayne Street, Woodsfield, Ohio 43793. Arrangements by Bauer-Turner Funeral Home Woodsfield.
