Vernon L. Burke Sr., age 91 of Woodsfield, Ohio passed away Wednesday September 30, 2020. He was born August 18, 1929 at New Matamoras, Ohio a son of the late Clyde & Alice Cline Burke.
Vernon was a truck driver for 55 years and visited 48 states, and was a member of the VFW, Eagles, and Moose Lodge. He was also a deputy for the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department. Vernon had enlisted in the US Army June 1, 1947. He was stationed at Presidio, San Francisco as a Military Policeman and was selected as personal guard for President Truman during his speech at Berkeley, California.
Preceded in death by his children Leroy Burke, Rick Burke, Peggy Coleman, and Holly Burke, three brothers and one sister.
He is survived by his wife Billie Jean Murphy Burke of Woodsfield whom he married March 18, 1950, children Steve (Nancy) Burke of Newcomerstown, Ohio, Randy (Karen) Burke of Dennison, Ohio and daughters-in-law Glenda Burke of Dennison, Ohio and Lesa Burke of Perrysville, Ohio, siblings Mary Lee Munday of Wooster, Ohio, Bob Burke of Massillon, Ohio and Janet Sweeney Burke of Coshocton, Ohio, 10 grandchildren, and 20 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
There will be no visitation. Burial will be in the West Union Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
