Alta Marie Rhodes-Carter, 79, of Woodsfield passed away peacefully in her sleep on September 20, 2018. Alta had been diagnosed with lung cancer in May. Alta was born on October 3, 1938, to Allen and Hester Rhodes, in Edinburgh, IL. Her mother died 6 weeks after her birth and Alta was raised by Claude and Faye Newell in Langley, IL, as their own child. Faye and her daughter Pauline raised Alta and Pauline’s son Larry Workman, as siblings. Cousins, Alta and Larry were very close. Alta kept in contact with her father and siblings Shirley, Mike, Keith, and Vivian and younger half sibling Carol Lee.

Alta married Thurman (Junior) Carter on April 19, 1957. The couple moved to Akron, Ohio. Alta was a legal secretary, working initially for the Goodrich Tire and Rubber Legal Department. She subsequently worked in the legal field until she retired from Buckingham, Doolittle and Burroughs in 1995. Alta was a proud member of The Daughters of the American Revolution.

Thurman and Alta retired to the Monroe County farm they owned since 1968 and built their dream home. Alta joined the Monroe County Horseman’s Association and raised Morgan horses. Thurman and Alta attended the Moffett Fletcher Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her Father and Mother: Hester and Alan Rhodes. Her foster parents: Claude and Faye Newell. Her Husband Thurman Junior Carter. Her brothers: Mike and Keith Rhodes. Her sisters: Geraldine (Newell) DaRoss, Pauline (Newell) Workman, Shirley (Rhodes) Hayes, Vivian (Rhodes) Kinsel, and Carol Lee Rhodes.

Alta is survived and will be missed by her two daughters: Elizabeth Anne (William) Thomas, and Annamarie (Roger) Brown. Her great-grandchildren: Sally Elizabeth, Seraphina Alexandra, and Elaina Violet Thomas. Carter Family, my deepest sympathy on the passing of your loved one. She was always a jewel to wait on both at Riesbeck's and the Auditor's office. I always enjoyed visiting with her as she was such an interesting person to talk to. May God wrap his loving arms around you, and bring you comfort and peace. You will all be in my thoughts and prayers.
In Christian Love, Pandora
